Simple and understated, these posters are so creative. I like the smooth, clean lines as a form of visual expression.

Rosemary's Baby is such a great flick.  Have you seen it? Mia Farrow's style is classic and serene, yet the film is so spooky and weird.  Not sure I would recommend it to a friend who is pregnant, though.

Movie indulgence

Instead of curing the blues with food last night,  I decided we should go to the movies (again).  We saw Sofia Coppola's new film, Somewhere.  The best part was, our local free weekly paper was hosting a movie night for their readers, so we were surprised with free tickets!  

The cinematography in Somewhere was beautiful with loads of airy, washed out shots of Los Angeles and southern California.  The plot, ......hmmm.  I wasn't totally captivated by the plot.  Elle Fanning's performance, on the other hand, was delightfully innocent and beautiful. How often do we see an 11 year old shine and glimmer on film with their own natural poise and sensibility?  Not often enough, I realized.

Feeling blue

Last night we saw Blue Valentine.  And, yesterday my mom went home after a lovely visit to our home in B-more.  To top it off, I'm working Saturday, so today feels like Monday again.  The sum of this equation is that today feels rough. 

Too often I convince myself that I deserve a treat or reward for surviving another day, but I'm getting tired of eating my way out of the blues.  I even considered a gym membership. Meh.

It seems like many people I know are feeling a little blue as of late.  (In fact, I think the girls across the table from me at the coffee shop are having a full-blown counseling session at their table, wowza.  Three cheers for self-affirmation!)

Joan, Peggy and Betty Ornaments

These felt Mad Men Christmas tree ornaments are so adorable and fun. I wonder if anyone would know it was supposed to be them if they were hanging from your tree?  

Isn't Betty's scowl so fitting?  And Peggy's bangs are spot on.  Joan even has a finger puppet in her honor!

I guess the fun is over; we finished Mad Men Season 4 last night which means one thing: we're caught up. I hate it when this happens. 

Not only am I addicted to the show and bummed there are no more new episodes until next summer, but damnit, Don Draper, I really didn't appreciate your behavior this season.  Just like every season, now that I think about it.  What are we supposed to think/feel/do about you? 

Your smile and charm are just a front for your evil, selfish ways!  You're the guy we dated and dumped when we realized there is no fixing a guy like you.  I'm in a tousle.

Black Swan

The new Natalie Portman ballet thriller Black Swan opens tonight. It looks creepy, intriguing and beautifully shot.

Portman did all the dancing for the movie herself and trained for over a year to do so. I'm looking forward to seeing it this weekend.

Gotta love Don

If you don't watch Mad Men, don't bother.  If you do, this is sooo quintessential Don Draper.

Gone Mad

We're watching Mad Men via Netflix these days. I can't get enough.  We can sit down and plow through five or six episodes back to back, no problem.  But, I'm worried that in less than two days, we've almost finished the entire second season.  What will we do when we catch up to reality and have to wait for episodes to air on TV?

Have you seen it?  Do you find it addicting or boring?  I'm loving the slow, steady pacing of the storyline. And of course, the gorgeous sets and costumes.  Plus, it's a nice change of scenery from The Wire. Heh.

29 Days

While the ending of Annie Hall doesn't look quite look like a classic love story, I seem to remember it that way, anyway. 

In May 2007, Ryan and I saw Annie Hall together.  We'd been dating for less than a year, we were infatuated with each other, and we hadn't been apart for even a few days.

So now when I think of Annie Hall, I think of it as "our movie".  It feels like a love story in the end, after all.

"Eat sh*t and die."

Before you're insulted at my use of profanity or scratch your head as to why I would suggest such a thing... recall back to 1989 when Shirley MacClain told Tom Skeritt this memorable quote in the classic film, Steel Magnolias.  Never seen it? Time to make a plan. 

 

This film is brimming with quotable lines, unbelievable 80's style,

and one extremely moving scene featuring Sally Field.  If you haven't taken the time to see it- put it on the Netflix queue now and plan a sleep over with your best friend.

My favorite parts of the film included the first act since it was all about Julia Roberts' character's wedding.
